2012 Primus Cabernet Sauvignon

Community Tasting Note

Does not like this wine:

85 Points

Friday, April 29, 2016 - Dark crimson red color. Heavy nose of sweet earthy chocolate berries, but confused, covered, and muddled by mixed baking spice aromas Presumeably attributed to heavy bathing in new oak. High alcohol is perceptible immediately on the palate, especially with air intake. This is a hot heavy wine from Chile. Not necessarily unappealing; it probably will be to most, but it tastes like every other new world Cabernet or cab blend I've come across. I was a big fan of the 2009 Primus 'The Blend', so much so that I bought future vintages and bottles, including this Cabernet. I found the '09 to be a balanced endeavor that still showed and shined its sense of place in Chile. However, I do not plan to buy more from this label. Neither this wine, nor the 2013 'The Blend' is as balanced or, in my opinion, well made as the previously mentioned vintage. Very worked, and over the top. If, if it ages well, I will eat my words...But I do not expect too much. Go for it if you crave a big cloying alcoholic fruit bomb that is sweet smelling and nondescript. The only cool thing is the hint of earthiness on the nose under the alcohol and candy spices. Maybe with a charred rare steak.

The syrupy mouthfeel is heavy, with baked cassis and prune flavors suggesting overripe fruit. Fig, chocolate and sawdust notes come up on a cloying finish." He gave it an 83, which seems closer to the mark
