Sunday, December 31, 2017 - The cork was perfect. I let this one breathe in the bottle for 2 hours, then decanted for one hour. Nice legs and wonderful ruby color. The austere nose exhibited wood, earth, tobacco leaf, herbs & spice, a whiff of cherry, and, after 5 hours, a hint of mint. Light acidity with fully integrated tannins in a medium-bodied presentation. The fruit on the palate was still solid, but showing it's age, with cherry and currant accompanied by tobacco leaf, oak, and a bit of vanilla in the background. Tart-ish cherry carried into the medium finish. The flavors had the distinctive traits of the 2003 vintage (at least my interpretation of it), especially the subtlety in the structure and the under-stated terroir. The character of this wine seemed to have plateaued, so consider drinking it soon. It was enjoyable, not amazing, with my steak dinner, and a good one for New Year's Eve to toast at midnight. Cheers !
