92 Points

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 - Pop and pour, really scrumptious nose displaying five very clear notes, strawberry jam, cherry compote, cinnamon, anise and iron. Very clean palate, a bit one dimensional and linear, good acidity, strong iron and a medium to long strong iron/mineral driven finish. Very strong but fine tannins at the end. The second night, the fruit remains red but warmer and rounder. The palate becomes softer, less noticeable tannins. It is fascinating to compare this to the 12 and 13 Monvigliero. To be fair, I only had the 13 Monvigliero at the winery just about the same time last year. The 13 Barolo is like a great village Chambolle, pure, clean and delicious for now where the Monvigliero is like a top Bonne Mares, a lot of finesse, beautifully layered, complex and structured. This displays the structure to age gracefully, gaining complexity through the development of tertiary notes.
