Sunday, September 3, 2023 - The 2005 Léoville Poyferré is actually quite giving today, though I wouldn’t say it’s quite ready to go. Despite showing a fair amount of red fruit right out of the gate, this moves quickly in a blueberry/blackcurrant direction with more air. There’s lots of cedar, salinity, a little licorice, and a subtle potpourri note alongside. These complexities - and the wine’s depth - are better appreciated with half an hour of air, though it closes down again after about an hour and a half in the decanter and never fully re-opens (even the next day). It hasn’t quite eaten its oak yet, but it’s pretty close and is an enjoyable drink now if you catch it in an open window. Though this is only 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, the plate shows no lack of tannin. It’s a funny contrast with the pretty, red-fruited, lipsticky finish.

62% CS, 28% M, 8% PV, 2% CF. 13.5% ABV.
