Sunday, September 6, 2015 - Was interested in this wine, given the complaints I've heard about Magnien being overly extracted and overly oaked. I drank about 10% of the bottle over about 2-3 hours, while breathing in the glass/bottle, and then consumed the rest with dinner. I enjoyed this wine, and didn't find the oak over powering, although pregnant wife immediately detects wood chips. It also had a bit of a smokey character that may have come from the barrel. It was a beautiful clear ruby/purple color. An ever evolving baking spice and floral nose that was mixed with ripe plum and coffee. The alcohol was fairly high and it had a somewhat thick and soft texture that came across a little flabby and almost buttery. I have not had enough Gevrey Chambertin to know what is typical of Gran Cru, but I suspect that this would not stand up to competition from this vineyard. Nonetheless, it pared nicely with veal ribeye's gently fried in butter. Your standards would have to be a very high not to enjoy this.
