Saturday, September 30, 2023 - From 75cl, a bottle of impeccable provenance. Exquisite cork, decanted 1 hour, did not develop or improve during the evening. Smells and tastes like a rich, luxurious, possibly Californian Bdx blend entering early maturity, but beyond the ripe dark black fruit, expensive oak and smooth texture (delicious, all of them), I can't recognise a sense of place, a feeling of depth, or any kind of resonant character here. If I had more of this, I'd hold off at least 5 years before opening another bottle in the hope that a bit of St. Estèphe or—daring thought—even specific Cos character might emerge. The substance does seems to be there. But this might be quite wrong: The Chateau seems to recommend drinking Pagodes within 10 years after the vintage, so even allowing for the French habit of downing their most age-worthy wines in infancy, this might well have been most fun when it was still young, dumb and full of the joys of spring. 88P(+?)
