Tuesday, October 17, 2023 - From Soup to Nuts - Or In This Case, Wine to Olive Oil

There aren’t many wineries near Napa that can claim both wine grape vineyards and olive trees that then can produce olive oil on site. Today’s wine comes from just such an organization. Round Pond Estate.

Now in the hands of the 2nd generation owners, brother and sister, Miles MacDonnell and Ryan MacDonnell Bracher, they oversee the 468-acre Rutherford Farm and one of only two olive mills in the region. The wine today is the:

Round Pond Estate "Reserve" Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Situated in the heart of Rutherford, California, and using only sustainable farming practices, the wines are carefully crafted by a trio of winemakers; Thomas Rivers Brown (Consulting Winemaker), John Wilson (Consulting Winemaker), and the Estate Winemaker, Jeff Plant.

This trio helps to create wines of richness and superb quality, as can be ascertained by today’s wine. The wine begins with rich plum and blackberry notes that are nestled by soft tannins leading to a pleasant finish. A dose of acidity helps brighten the wine and its enjoyability. As good as this wine is, I would consider drinking this vintage sooner rather than later.

For over 40 years Round Pond Estate has graced us with its wines, I think it only fitting that we should reciprocate and try some of their wines. While I haven’t tried them as of yet, maybe their olive oil as well!

Cheers
