Saturday, January 7, 2012 - From 75cl, a pristine bottle of impeccable provenance, not moved between 1985 and 2011, fill into neck. A little solid crystalline deposit, decanted clear. Perfect cork, 1/3 stained. Mature orange bricking to rim, but very substantial dark red body. Decanted 1 hour, drank over 2 hours, best at very end. Boy, this is a wonderful mature 2nd growth Margaux. Entirely linear from the gently spiced (more oak than cedar, a touch of raw leather) aroma through the gentle, rainwater texture of the entry, the gradual gain of tannins through the sweet mid-palate (don't start nagging me to define fruits... possibly highly refined blackberry rumtopf?) on to the very long, seamless finish, slightly anaesthetising the tongue with a kind of star anis spicy sweetness. No this isn't a gob-smackingly "great wine", but it is genial, perfect in its way, a bench-mark for purity, longevity and half a dozen other virtues I don't want to rack my brains for in the glorious wash of this 29.5-year-old's beautiful, resonant, minutes-long aftertaste. 93P
