Friday, January 22, 2016 - I've had this wine a few times and unfortunately just haven't had great luck with it. It's never charming and usually a bit austere as was the case last night.

Poured to a beautiful ruby red color, both the bouquet and flavors are a bit subdued. Definitely softens with aeration, but the tannins mainain a hard edge that's more powerful than the fruit.

I've not come across that magical bottle yet, and I'm starting to wonder if I will. Not a friendly wine. For me the LLC, Gruaud and even PL are better.

2/6/2016 8:40:00 AM - I would think probably not - some of the 86s are starting to drink really nicely with a little splash in the decanter, but over the past couple of years I can think of quite a few that have needed a few hours of air. Ch Margaux, LLC, Ducru, Palmer, Lalande, Barton come to mind as some of the 86s that have required 2-3 hours in the decanter to start opening up. On top of that, the Margaux, Palmer, and LLC just aren't truly ready no matter how long the decant. Your note mentions that you've had the 86 Mouton before, do you know how much air it got then? I've got a bottle and from time to time I check on cellartracker to see if people think they've finally opened up a bit!

2/6/2016 5:03:00 PM - the other time i had it was in two stages....when i drink by myself i will often pour half the bottle into a 375ml and immediately cork it, while drinking the remains of the 750ml.

i don't know what someone like Parker would say about this, but wine poured into a 375ml will definitely last a couple days (even 1 week plus) unless it is very fragile.

i did this with an 86 Mouton and there was no question the portion i poured off into the 375ml was better 2-3 days later than the portion i drank on the first night.

so that certainly supports your theory. i rarely bother with a decanter but next time will give try it with the Mouton
