100 Points

Wednesday, May 10, 2017 - Mouton dinner with Philippe Dhalluin and Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): I am not going to lie. I love the 86 Mouton and consider it one of the greatest Bordeauxs. Explosive nose displaying intense creme de cassis, subtle floral perfume, liquid smoke, ink, caramel, cedar, milk chocolate, lead pencil and mineral. Mindboggling concentration, layers upon layers of cassis and ink driven fruit, silky and polished, a hint of sweet tannins and the finish that subtly resonates. This particular bottle is incredibly youthful yet perfectly hedonistic. A couple tasters mentions this being tight and young. Though youthful, I find the wine to be perfect. Phillipe mentions that there was no selection at Mouton in 1986. I wonder what would have happened if the Chateau had a second label.

6/5/2017 11:39:00 AM - DC - how long did you decant? i've had a good experience once out of about 3-4 tries, when i decanted for 3 hours. but never thought it better than the 82

6/5/2017 12:05:00 PM - I like the pure fruit expression of the 86, i.e. cooler and more energetic, compare to the 82 which is quite decadent. The bottle was pop and pour. As you know, the 82 is the reference Mouton. I think some preferred the 82 at the event.
