Friday, December 15, 2006 - It was difficult and perhaps impossible not to have our thoughts on the VD influenced by the 2001 Pegau Cuvee Laurence tasted next to it. The Vieux Donjon initially came across as a tad sweet to some of the tasters, dominated as it is by the ripe to super-ripe Grenache of the vintage presented in a traditional CdP package. But I found that the wine really sharpened up with time in the glass, developing more intensity, brightness and grip. The nose blossomed as well, showing lovely kirsch and strawberry aromas. In the end, I thought it held its own quite well with the slightly younger Pegau, although the difference in style was quite clear.
