Friday, November 21, 2008 - Stellar bottle. This is a wine that wowed me in 2003 and really got me deeply excited about Bordeaux over the past 5 years, but several recent bottles have disappointed me. However, there was nothing disappointing about this stellar magnum which I brought to a friend's 40th birthday party. Double-decanted for sediment about 4 hours before service. A gorgeous nose of tobacco, stalk and ripe fruit moves into a supple palate that interplays gorgeously between sweet, ripe plums, mineral and underbrush. Poyferre when young makes me think of "rocks and blood," but this supple and mature version is all at once complex, delicious, sultry and riveting. This powerful wine definitely seems to benefit from gentle aeration. Fantastic bottle!
