Sunday, August 2, 2020 - Allowed to breathe from the bottle for 1:45, not decanted, and followed from standard Cabernet stems.
Fragrant nose is meaty and heavy with leather; this screams Bordeaux, and the nose is not all shy about it.
Extraordinarily well balanced on the palate, particularly given its age. There’s a lot going on here with mature fruit, leather Coffee and caramel. When cool there’s a hint of pepper and spice, but this diminishes as it approaches room temp. I I The finish is sweet, yet there’s a dry component that allows this to really linger on the outer edges of the back-palate.
Now enjoying my final glass out of a sommelier stem and there’s a notable difference. The nose is more New World than Bordeaux; the wines approach has more tannin and strength, yet the finish is softer and a bit more brief.
My final bottle from this vintage, this was significantly better than last nights 2004 Montelena. This is really something special, and while it can last a few more years, I’m not sure that it will improve with age, at least for our palate. Bravo!
