90 Points

Thursday, January 4, 2024 - With this old bottle of Napa Valley, I wanted to discover the Napa Valley wines of yesteryear, more modest in alcohol (here 13°) at the time than the contemporary high-density bombs.

Nose of smoke, ashes and spices. It reminds me of barbecue.

On the palate, the attack is soft, ash and smoke are the dominant aromas with a hint of fruit. This remains a pleasant experience on a Napa that is almost 50 years old. But to be honest, its best days are behind it and the somewhat fleeting structure does not allow the wine to gain momentum and express itself. Good finish where the fruit manages to take over but without particular intensity.

Good wine but past its peak.
