Friday, March 13, 2009 - This is a psychologically complicated wine. There's a lot going on here, as it attempts to cope with childhood issues. I always love to use the term "layered" when I describe Leoville Poyferre from any vintage-- I think I saw Parker or Suckling or somebody use that descriptor once-- and I truly think it fits, particularly with the 1996 vintage. This thirteen year old is strapping and gangly. The thick T-bones are on the grill....
I personally think it has a vegetal streak running through it. Tobacco, oak, and coffee. Complex, but still an adolescent. I'm going to be disappointed in myself if I uncork my next bottle sooner than the twenty year mark for this wine. Rating: 92 points.
