Thursday, November 2, 2023 - Dessert Wine or Not, It Was Wonderful

Right off the bat, as I poured today’s wine, I noticed a golden hue emerge from within my glass. The palate was rich and powerful with peach, apple, and pear, alongside a vein of sweetness (not talking about Bears running back Walter Payton), of honey notes that mingled in my glass.

While technically a dessert wine, I decided to try it alongside a dish of Salmon with Jalapeno Rice and Red Pepper Sticks.

Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Clos du Bourg Première Trie 2016

Sourced from the Clos du Bourg vineyard at Huet, it is described to be “the greatest of all Vouvray vineyards. With the Première Côte’s shallowest, stoniest soils, its wines often synthesize Le Mont’s intense minerality with Le Haut-Lieu’s generous texture.” Given also the title of Moelleux 1ère Trie (“first selection”), there could be no doubt of the quality and excellence of this wine.

There is little else that needs to be said about this wine, except that continued aging is not out of the question, I may have even jumped the gun a bit. So you know, the wine was an excellent pairing for the food. The sweetness calmed the spiciness of the jalapenos but didn’t overpower the rest of the fare.

Cheers
