Monday, May 25, 2020 - 2016 Clonakilla Shiraz Hilltops was floral, elegant and balanced. The Canberra District Shiraz was medium ruby in colour without any sediments. It took two hours of decanting to round out the edge of bitter astringency. On the nose, there were aromas of blackberries, violet blossom, vanilla, liqourice, game and a dash of black pepper. On the palate, it was dry and medium-full bodied, elegantly textured with medium levels of balanced acidity and finely grained tannin. Flavours of blueberries, iron, spiced beef stock and smoke were present in a medium-long savoury finish. The alcohol was at the modest level of 14.0%.

Clonakilla puts Canberra on the wine map by producing exceptional Shiraz, from prestigious Shiraz-Viognier to affordable Hilltops Shiraz. It is unfortunate that Clonakilla does not produce any wines in the 2020 vintage because of smoke taint, following the widespread wildfire from November 2019 to January 2020.

Purchased at CAD 28.55 from the provincial alcohol monopoly, this entry-level cuvée presented incredible value.
