85 Points

Thursday, March 22, 2018 - 8% alcohol. Tasted blind among 49 other 2016 Riesling Kabinetts in Kabinett Cup 2016.

Pale green color. Somewhat restrained and rather dry nose with aromas of exotic fruits, some peach, a little pineapple and a hint of apple jam - i.e. normally quite sweet aromas, yet still not really showing much sweetness. The wine is light-bodied, pure and off-dry on the palate with very crisp and racy acidity and somewhat lean - even a bit austere - flavors of grapefruit and pomelo, stony bitterness, some steely character and a hint of apple peel. Overall the wine shows intensity of flavor and even some sweetness, but very little fruit. The finish is very lively, pretty lean and slightly sweet with intense flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some green apples, a little bit of steely minerality and a hint of quinine bitterness.

A rather lean, austere and tightly-knit Riesling that feels partly just way too young and partly just barely ripe. Perhaps some age might help the wine to resolve and unwind a little, because now it feels pretty too lean and closed for pleasure. Most likely the wine will never be particularly fruity, but now the wine is more aggressive and angular than that drinkable. The wine didn't score any points from any of the 12 judges. At 10,50€ the wine is more or less priced according to its quality.
