Wednesday, February 20, 2019 - Perhaps my first rating of this wine was a bit high, but I believe this wine will have a good future once it sorts itself out over the next 6-12 months. After a 3 hour decant, the wine started showing what the McGah vineyard can do, as well as the talents of Mike Smith. Cherry, blueberry, cassis, along with some minerality on the nose after hour 3. I am getting some tart fruits and tannin on the midpalate, and the finish is short for now. I truly believe the 2016 vintage will sort itself out, but if you have multiples and you've got a 2016 Scarlett Cab itch, it's not a wasted opportunity. Actually a really nice cab with food at this point, as the higher acid/tannin (compared to the 2015 vintage, and other Mike Smith cabs) works well. Still some booze/oak/fruit to integrate, but when it does I think it'll be a very nice cab for the price. Also, I just checked the Scarlett website and Mike recommends 2-3 years for the wine to mellow out, which I don't disagree with. It should be quite long lived! For now...either decant, or enjoy the 2015 vintage if you have any extra!
