90 Points

Thursday, December 5, 2013 - Best Bottle Dinner at The Steakhouse in Lachen. We drank this Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 2005 next to a bottle of Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto 2005. We poured the wine into a decanter, served the first glass after about 30 minutes and consumed the bottle over a period of about four hours. The medium- to full-bodied Domenico Clerico offered cherry, rose petal, rosewater, some chocolate and a hint of vanilla on the nose. On the palate the wine showed cherry, black tea, high slightly tart acidity and high tannin, with very good length.

Compared to the Giacosa Le Rocche del Falletto the Domenico Clerico Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was riper, darker and fuller whereas the lighter-colour, lighter-bodied Giacosa was the more balanced and clearly the much more elegant wine of the two. The Domenico Clerico seemed simpler and almost plump in comparison and was clearly outshone by the class of the Giacosa. I am sure that the Domenico Clerico would have shown better if we hadn’t paired it with the superb Giacosa though.
