Thursday, July 8, 2021 - Deep ruby red with high optical density and medium mostly specular reflectivity (just touches of turbidity). On the nose, cassis and plum fruits with cedar and tobacco spices and a touch of volatile acidity (definitely present, but not overpowering or anything). The simple nose leaves an impression of a pretty generic cabernet more than Rioja, but if you look hard you can sense some of the indicators perhaps.

On the palate, medium in body and acidity, with a bit of a flimsy structure; there are tannins that hold things up a bit, but seems disjointed a bit, as the texture is thin and yet it jabs at the palate. Flavours of bitter fruit skins on that attack, with some earth and spices, but not very complex, as there's no layering, just a narrow presence of flavours. The midpalate hollows out, and things drop off toward the finish, with intensity and complexity all but shutting down toward the finish, which is short, and bitter (perhaps light elements of tart fruits and oak spice and leather).

This is a generic red with not much personality and no real sense of variety and region. Could be just about any cheap red here, and falls into the below average category. Not surprising necessarily, as Kirkland hits some and misses others, but this is a miss for me, as even in this price range, there are wines that can deliver more.
