95 Points

Tuesday, February 11, 2020 - Second of 2 bought at auction ($120.00@) a bit over a year ago. I'm re-reviewing because of a materially different tasting experience. Bottle 1 was undeniably tasty, but a bit overripe and not particularly interesting; it also tasted pretty close to the end of its life as a premium wine. This time, opened and immediately resealed, since per my experience and mark's tasting note, air didn't seem to be its friend. Cork came out cleanly but broke thereafter. In the glass, giant nose of ripe red and black fruit and dark flowers. On the immediate palate, fairly intense tannins and heat, almost undrinkable to me. After 15 minutes of vigorous swirling, the tannins and alcohol integrated, and this became sublime. Powerful notes of ripe black cherries, blueberries, blackberries, violets, earthy minerality, glycerine, lead, chocolate, camphor and eucalyptus. Purplish black, full, full bodied, huge legs. Intense, persistent, suffused with sweet, sweet fruit, and complex, if not totally tightly focused. After the first 15 minutes, no heat. I must respectfully disagree with Geaux and say I get virtually no acidity, which not only makes me think that this is a drink sooner wine--although holding up well on the second night--but also a better standalone sipper than a food wine (if it were better in this regard, it would be worth another point or 2). Tons of sediment, so if that sort of thing bothers you, decant, if only to get it out of the wine. Still, a great drink, decent qpr at what I paid, if slightly shaky at full boat retail. 95+
