91 Points

Sunday, May 16, 2021 - This wine had a very promising nose. Lots of blackberry and black cherry on the palate. It even had me checking the label to make sure that it was indeed 24 years old. Accurate! Just goes to show you that the 1997 vintage has really been doing well in the last 2-3 years and the producer is top! Ok so the front of this wine is luscious and round. Had a sort of a roasted pecan character in there too. Really nice. Got to the middle and it started to throw some truffle oil and nitrogen. Not all that abnormal. The fruit started to really mellow and then I just started getting wet cardboard and gravel with lots of muted fruits. I would have put this to a 95-96 if it wasn't for the fact that this one just really didn't have all cylinders firing. I know this one shouldn't be at this stage already especially a TK Mondavi special release from a really strong vintagez so my guess is bottle variation is likely to blame here since I don't think the provenance is guaranteed here.
