90 Points

Thursday, December 10, 2015 - I didn't know I still had one of these, but this was tons better than what I thought was my last bottle, which I had about a year and a half ago, to the extent that I would now call the previous bottle closer to flawed.

Still a nice medium ruby with a bit of garnet at the rim. Very good nose (medium plus intensity) provided you are a fan of tertiary notes. Leather is the dominant note, with dried roses, spice box, a bit of wet earth and mushrooms, with a presence of red currant, that is really more just "red fruit" at this point. The palate is very much in line with the nose; red currants, plums, leather, tobacco and a bit of spice. A licorice-like, slightly bitter, note accelerates towards the finish, which I think is a function of the hot year. There are still a surprising amount of tannins, which outpace the acidity, but they are totally manageable with a pop and pour. I think this could hang on for a couple of years... maybe, but I can't see any way that this really improves. This was a really pleasant surprise for a $25 second wine, from a hit or miss vintage, and it much more complex than a typical California cab. at a similar price.
