Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - I had been afraid to open this wine, having read so many notes saying that it wasn't ready, that it needed time. I expected something monolithic, unyielding, in need of a serious decant. I have but a couple of bottles of this from my first allocation and want them to be worth all the coveting, but this was New Year's Eve and we were sitting down to dinner soon and so I went for it.

Even at the cooler cellar temp, the wine had a bouquet that jumped out of the bottle. Cherry cola, all spice, California PN for sure, if not RRV. But it was on the first taste that I had to smile--the wine delivered exactly what I was hoping for: pure fruit, spice, mocha, vanilla, wrapped in a silky velvet blanket that knit it all together. Finish was lingering like a sweet kiss. Not a profound or complex wine, but really beautifully balanced. I look forward to drinking my last two over the next couple of years as I don't expect it to get much better, but it should hold nicely as my Single Vineyard KBs mature.
