96 Points

Saturday, March 28, 2009 - My first >95 point wine. Sipping on this beauty is a transcendent experience. Only two other wines, a 2004 1er cru Meursault "Les Genevries" from Bouchard Pere et Fils and the 1990 Suduiraut, have actually made me feel weak in the knees just upon taking in the beauty of its nose. This wine brings rich, brooding aromas of iron, sanguine, rare ribeye steak, and fig. On the palate, the tannins are ever present but not overbearing, being small and square, arching beautifully over a palate of fresh cracked black pepper, iron, and some green spice with again a meaty flavor leading the way. The finish, like the palate, is wound a bit tight right now, lasting 30-45 seconds, but with aeration this wine shows potential to be one of the finest rhone wines of the 21st century thus far. Definitely hold onto most of your bottles for 5-10+ years, but if you have a half a case or more, this may be worth popping open right now.
