Thursday, May 19, 2011 - C: Burgundy colour, with hints of purple and some brown, particularly at the edges.
N: Less fruit and more farm than I remembered from the past few bottles. Strongly earthy (pine cones and top soil), a bit of horse, a tiny stinging stink of pig-sty, with a handful of bacon bits. Almost sea-spray minerality, and a bit dusty (although that may be the glass...). A tiny bit of strawberry and other red berries coming through, but not loads of fruit on the nose. Overall, an appealing and quite moreish nose because of the outdoorsy smell, although it may lack some fruit and be a bit too acidic (smells a bit too strongly of pig-sty).
P: Quite lacking any sort of attack at the beginning, and a very light mouthfeel. Moving on, the grip on the back of the mouth increases and the body seems to grow a little bit. Almost hairy on the bag of the tongue. Very sour, very much like unripe plums and plum skins. The farmyard returns a little bit on the back end, but not too much excitement there, really. It's quite one-dimensional. The alcohol is nicely in balance, though, and the finish of horse meat and cherry pits lasts for a long time (a minute at least). Overall, nowhere near as fresh, fruity or balanced as I had remembered.

O: Definitely showing bottle variation. Not a bad nose (quite appealing), but the mouthfeel is off balance, as are the flavours. Extremely sour. We'll see what happens after a day opened and corked again. 84 Points

48 hours later with the bottle corked:
N: The stinging pig manure is gone, replaced by a much more pleasant farmyard smell, combined with sweet red berries.
P: Much, much improved. The attack is much more fruit-forward, the mid-palate retains the spices and spice, and the finish is still as long as before, but the tannins are much more mellow. The overall mouthfeel is also much heavier.
O: This was a strange bottle, but after relaxing in the bottle for two days, the wine was back to its expected quality. New score for the total experience: 87
