Thursday, January 26, 2023 - I have been sampling Ridge Zins for 50 years. I remember the early ones as being mind blowers. Was that my youth or was it their over-the-top style? Today's Ridge Zins drink easily as soon as they're released and peak just a few years later, depending on their source. This one is 73% Zin, 17% Carignane, 7% Petite Sirah, 3% Alicante Bouschet. Good fruit plus vanilla from American oak aging, but too soft in the finish, which also shows a bitter, almost corked, taste. I hate to label Ridge this way, but it kind of reminds me of the Algerian reds we used to buy in the early 1970s — fat, fruity and alcoholic. Tho this wine is much better made. One can find better Zins (or Zin-based blends) for the same or lower prices.
