Saturday, September 22, 2012 - Dinner at New Ubin Seafood (New Ubin Seafood): This was stunningly young for a wine that has pushed past its first decade. It still needs a lot of time in the bottle, but I think it should make a very decent wine in say another 5-6 years. The nose was quite the typical Pomerol, with whiffs of sweet cherries, cassis and some deeper plum scents, and then lots of tobacco, some mossy undergrowth and a lilt of wilting flowers. I quite liked that, except for the fact that it was a little muddled here and there - like something you would get from a very young wine. The palate too, while displaying some nice qualities, was also so very primary. It had a core of sweet cherries and berries, maybe some cigary ash, but not much more showing on the attack and midpalate. What I did like though was the bright acidity, and the long, balanced finish with its hints of spice and flowers. A bit on the light-side for a Pomerol, but still with a nicely textured body with fine tannins lending some shape and relief to the wine. Very decent indeed.
