Monday, March 27, 2023 - Decided to look in on this early...and was not disappointed! On opening, this wine had a tremendous and effusive nose of perfectly ripened cherries and a touch of complicating brett. First sip was fireworks - everything the nose promised and more. Young wine with a formidable backbone of fine dry tannin. Plenty of mouthwatering fruit. Bit of sandalwood, leather, and cigar tobacco. Then...after about 20 minutes in the decanter/glass, the wine started to close in on itself. The nose retreated, and the palate became restrained by a wall of tannin. So I decided to do something I rarely try...I roughed up the wine...aggressively shaking and swirling the decanter for quite some time. Bringing the air in big time. Then I left the decanter alone for 30 minutes more. It worked like magic. The wine I first experienced on opening returned - a touch more subdued, but still quite approachable for such a young, masculine wine. Showing ample fruit and great balance. And simply amazing with a grilled sirloin steak. Fantastic wine with easily more than a decade to go until it hits anywhere near peak. Classic traditional Barolo. And a triumph in the context of the 2014 vintage.
