Friday, February 5, 2021 - Sometimes trying a new wine is a discovery; sometimes it's a dead end. This rustic and diffuse Pope Valley Cabernet is the latter. It has enough vague character to not be infuriating, but it is miles away from impressive. Garnet in color; full in body; nose of boysenberry, cedar, and pencil lead. Flavors of blueberry, leather, and browned toast, with a dry and grainy finish. Blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 14.8% alcohol.
This reminded me of Alexander Valley Cabernets I’ve tried (but not really enjoyed) over the years - yes, they achieve ripeness, but they lack the integration and density of wines from vineyards farther south. I understand this is a relatively new estate, so maybe it’s a matter of getting started (in which case, charging $150 is ridiculous). Even in the Never Never Land that is Napa pricing, this wine isn't worth half that amount.

2/6/2021 3:01:00 AM - MSU got talked in to this wine at a winebar a month ago and had the same reaction. Didn't realize at the time it was from Pope valley and felt the price was outrageous for the quality.

2/6/2021 7:38:00 AM - I also picked up a 3-pack on release, and while the packaging was right up there with the "best" (if you like the fancy packaging, which I actually wish would go the way of the dodo), the wine was not. I didn't even take notes since I was so disappointed that I just opened something else and moved on, but decided to jump back in to comment since I very much agree on the overall theme from MSUWINE's writeup. I have two more bottles so I'll try again in a year or two and see if anything changed, but I doubt it.
