95 Points

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - Not quite what I was expecting. My recollection of the '05 was one of a more approachable wine. The '06 comes across less developed wine, showing its youth a bit more. Brooding fruit and cassis on the nose. Palate coating fruit leads to a long finish, with acidity and tannins noticeably present. Unlike some "fruit bomb" shiraz, I don't find this in any way jammy, medicinal or "fake". Quite focused given it's depth. While I've not had the opportunity to follow an ageworthy Shiraz through it's 15-20+ year evolution, my sense is that the '06 Amon Ra, while "new world", is put together in the manner of a classic built for aging. My educated guess would be that the '05 shows better today, the '06 may very well show better in 15 years. Looking forward to reevaluating this evening after 6 or so hours in the decanter.
