Saturday, August 30, 2008 - Decanted 1 hr. Black and dense as a full solar eclipse, both in color and in palate density, or fruit weight if you will. Wait, did I just really write that? Damn you Sparky P!!!! ;) Anyway, most tasting notes on this sucker have a common theme of “balance”, that somehow while being such a monstrosity of a wine it achieves a palate equilibrium of sorts, and pulls it off. Officially count me in as a believer: it does and it did. At this very early point in the wines evolution, we are of course treated to a wealth of Barossa fruit, blackberry galore in full regalia; paired finely with a smoky quality displaying the syrah / shiraz pedigree. The wines classy edge of French Oak is poking out a bit a present, but by no means a distraction, it’s a very skill full use of the wood. The tannins were actually a little more pronounced than I expected, and would favor holding this for a few years before enjoying again.
