Sunday, November 5, 2023 - I’ve been looking forward to comparing the silver label Monastrell with last week’s Honoro Vera, also from Juan Gil. So, let’s get into it.

Nose of blackberries pouring into the decanter, followed by a one hour decant. Translucent cherry on the pour into the glass. Mild cherry on the nose, similar to the Honoro Vera with the addition of some tobacco smoke.

It’s fairly leggy but those legs take longer to develop than usual. Higher viscosity, maybe? This is 15% ABV. Deep purple in color.

Dark fruit is front and center on the palate. Blackberries, black cherries perhaps. Leather, black pepper, gravel. Bright and spicy acidity, medium-plus chalky tannins. Dry. Bold, medium to full bodied. An interesting assortment of flavors lend this one a lively personality. I can definitely see this wine going well with smoked meats, though I did not have it with food.

I would put this wine ahead of the Honoro Vera but behind the Cline Mourvèdre in it’s flavor profile, understanding the terroir of the two is not the same.
