Friday, October 17, 2008 - Opened wine, NOT decanted, poured in glass immediately. Quite yellow in color. ON the nose, lemon pie. Very big with quite mature lemon fruit and some pie crust. A bit of warmth on the nose from the alcohol (13.5%). On the palate, quite fruity, residual sugar. Acidity not open and vibrant yet. Luxurious and rich. A very warm vintage in Germany, so I didn't know what to expect. This is the top wine from Leitz and even in 2003, he produced a top rated wine.
Just 10 minutes in the glass and some aeration, the nose was completely different: the fruitiness softened, some petroleum and minerality emerged. ON the palate, the wine was much more balanced and open. The acidity was extremely high, minerality more noticeable. The only lament I could come up with was a very slight warming of the back roof of the mouth from the alcohol. This is a wine that will improve with age in my opinion. The alcohol will integrate and the wine will become more elegant.
Half a bottle left and refrigerated for tomorrow night, so check back for tasting notes, day 2:
The wine become much more serious the next day. More elegant and some very exciting honeysuckle notes. Great to drink now, but plenty of life ahead of this wine!
