Tuesday, July 1, 2008 - Wow wow wow. 4th vintage we've had of the Krankl's infamous syrah. While I've been on the waiting list for way too long, we've been fortunate enough to happen into these exceptional wines at very reasonable prices. Tonight, we started by pairing the Fe2O31a with an incredible foie gras and onion stuffed quail in peach gastrique and grits with a bunch of different shrooms, parm, country ham and thyme followed by "pork three ways" and "black grouper." This was another prime example of California Syrah, another bullseye for Manfred. On the nose, explosive perfume of bacon fat, leather, smoke, sweat (?), and dark, dark fruits. On the palate, a seamless, wicked long finish that was incredibly thick, complex, yet precise and balanced. If memory serves, not quite as complex as Into the Dark, but amazingly satisfying and delicious with our meal.
Someday, after the damned 4+ years I've been waiting, I'll make THE list. Wow. What a wine. 97+pts, but I am probably being conservative; especially considering the new dress my lovely wife broke out tonight...which was a solid 100 pter.
