Wednesday, April 8, 2020 - Such a nice surprise - I was rummaging through my cellar looking for my last bottle of Von der Fels 2010, when I found this bottle of the 2006! I thought that my small stock had run out years ago. Last bottle from a half case purchased in 2008. Excellent level, but the cork disintegrated. I don't think that this wine was designed to last this long, especially from such a difficult vintage in Rheinhessen, but it has survived reasonably well. The full yellow colour indicates a good bit of evolution, and the warm nose and broad palate confirm this, with a delicately honeyed character, touches of tobacco and butter and softer textures. On the finish however, the chalky minerality shines through, there are herbal notes and firm phenolic grip, and notes of citrus and tropical fruits emerge. Objectively past its peak I would have thought, but still a lovely drink. Note: according to Mosel Fine Wines, the 2006 Von der Fels comes only from Grand Cru sites, essentially from the Dalsheimer Hubacker, the Abtserde part of the Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen, the Westhofener Kirchspiel and Westhofener Morstein.
