Thursday, April 25, 2024 - First let me preface, I have no experience with Xarello. Reading the description for this grape online, I do not find this wine at all austere, except for perhaps the very first few minutes upon opening.

Purchased on a whim – while perusing JJB I noticed a single bottle and was intrigued. The recommendation in the brochure that came with the wine is to let it set a short while to unfold and it was certainly enjoyable to do so.

On the nose, it reminds me of a German Riesling, and it has a hint of wet stones.

Initial impression on tasting was “a white wine that just happens to have bubbles” (yeah, not very descriptive.) There is citrus – perhaps lime, and over a short time, some very nice mineral notes emerge. Early on I noticed a brief bitterness, in a pleasant way, but it went away within a short time. While it is an acidic wine, it is very nicely balanced. I could imagine this wine going very well with seafood or creamed based sauces. I tried it with a bit of Colston Bassett Silton cheese, and while it wasn’t the best pairing it brought out a softer and very enjoyable aspect to the wine.

I’m happy to have had the chance to try this!
