Wednesday, December 10, 2008 - It is, as they say, a very well-made wine for the money, but I think I am just not that into Malbec as a stand-alone varietal, however much I wanted to be. I keep revisiting the wines of this region but while I am happy with the quality I don't fall in love. I would like to try a blend that uses Malbec as a focus but rounds, deepens, and softens with the addition of merlot and or cabernet.
For this the fruit profile lacks purity, what exactly am I looking for or tasting? But the main problem I have is that while the entry is a bit sweet, that drops off into bitterness, and not the pleasant bitter chocolate kind either, but actual bitterness. The finish is too short and I kept wishing for some Merlot or Cab in there to soften the second act and lead into a third...
