Saturday, September 17, 2016 - Drank side-by-side with a 2001 Monte Bello over dinner. An interesting comparison. Decanted and drank. Both similarly deep red, clear, very little sediment, just a tiny hint of brick at the edge. The two wines started out as you'd expect--the Lynch-Bages' minerality dominated, the Monte Bello was much more fruit forward, but as the evening went on, the Monte Bello fruit mellowed a bit as did the LB slatey-ness, revealing a cherry note. Nicely balanced, some tobacco and earth notes, and a good chewy finish. At the end, the similarities were more surprising than the differences. Still, our California palates preferred the MB by a note.
