Thursday, May 26, 2022 - Thrilled to open my first of 6, recently arrived from Berry Bros. London ordered over a year ago as an ex-Chateau offering. Paired with pan-seared tenderloins, no decant maybe 10 min slow ox. I don’t have a lot of experience with Lynch Bages (or Bordeaux for that matter) and there were many surprised with this wine based on my preconceived notions.
Cork slipped out in perfect condition, cork stain ultimately drying to a beautiful burgundy color. Zero sediment. Wine was a ruby red with only the ever-slightest garnet at the edges. Floral notes wafted from the glass almost immediately, followed by notes of distinct red fruit and faint hints of cedar. Palate had fresh fruit and a very pleasant medium+ acidity. This had all the appearances of a young, fresh wine, although obviously a young fresh Bordeaux doesn’t drink like this. Tannins were integrated and smooth and throughout dinner the bottle just sang.
After dinner I will note the bottle began to change. Frankly I don’t know if this has to do with the lack food of the evolution of the wine. The fruit diminished and concentrating on the structure I found less nuance than expected. I’ve actually deducted a point for this. The finish was moderately long, however.
Very interested in seeing how these continue to progress with time although I don’t know how long these will last in the cellar. Happy for any comments as this was a terrific experience.

5/27/2022 5:47:00 AM - I had the same experience last August. We did a 2 hour decant and the wine did not show as well as the notes here would indicate.

5/27/2022 11:51:00 PM - Thanks for your comment. I’m not very educated in this wine as I mentioned, but I wonder if it might be fully developed / peaking now and decanting for long period might be pushing it? I noticed in the comments that many people are drinking this LB vintage without decanting (more than one began drinking within 10 min of opening). For me, it was stellar upon opening but within an hour began the downhill journey on both nose and palate (and that with no decanting). I may be having another bottle soon and will comment if I find anything new/different.
