Friday, February 22, 2008 - Vaynerchuk called this wine "stupid good", and I agree. It is ridiculous juice!!!

This wine was the second of the night. Nose was very very promising, lots of red berries, mocha, vanilla. You could smell that it was going to be an absolute monster. I can’t remember the last time this happened, but upon the first taste I emitted a spontaneous and fairly loud “WOW” (mind you, this was a business dinner). It is a tremendously big wine (silky in terms of mouthfill) and the taste is consistent with the nose but mach 2 (along with some crème de cassis, a little spice—nutmeg???, and smoke).

To me, it drank a lot like some of the younger aussie shiraz I have had recently (thinking specifically about COL/Velvet Glove, Hundred Acre and Amon Ra). Thus, I followed it with the Hundred Acre, my favorite of the short list above, as a test of sorts. This one blew the Hundred Acre away in terms of balance and purety (granted, I am comparing two very young wines). I took the money I was preparing to spend on a couple of bottles of the Hundred Acre and spent it on the Tobacco Road.

Without doubt, the WOTN. Price tag way steep (close to $300). They also have a To Kalon that is around $75, which I am looking forward to trying as something in the more accessible price range.
