Sunday, April 16, 2017 - A difficult wine to evaluate. Immediately after opening and decanting, a corked-like taint emerged. As it disappeared over the next two hours, it was clearly not cork taint but rather some dusty, firm and rustic tannins. I appreciate the tannins in the structure of the Gouges wines, but after 29 years when little else remains in the wine, you have to conclude that ultimately the wine was poorly balanced. There is not enough fruit or texture to stand up to the harsh tannins. This wine is not going to improve. Certainly still enjoyable with a lamb roast, which explains the decent score.
