A lot of tannins. I let it open for nearly two hours and it still needed time. For a 1997, I am very surprised about how much time this wine still seems to have. After I wrote this, I went back after the wine had been in the decanter for four hours and it had opened nicely to be an impressive wine with a lot of balance. Notes of leather and spice evident with the testing after four hours but not so much after two.
