Sunday, June 21, 2009 - The Robert Mondavi Meritage is an unusual blend of goodness in a bottle. OK, that is a little trite I guess...more specifically it is: Cabernet Sauvignon (72%) with Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc thrown in for good measure. And this blend REALLY works!

This was a deep, powerful wine which presented as dark, opulent red in the glass. All light was trapped in this glass and could not begin to penetrate the wine. The nose smelled of tart berries, forest floor and earth. On the palate I got stewed prunes, jammy berries and lots of flavor. The finish was long, which I like, and the taste hung around for at least a minute in my mouth after it was gone.

This wine, in combination with an excellent book (The Story of Edgar Sawtelle), really made for a great Saturday evening. A tranquil atmosphere, some self-absorbed occupation...nice to indulge every one in a while!

Have a great Father's Day weekend everyone!
