2001 Château Latour Grand Vin

Sunday, March 3, 2013 - Paired with prime rib and creamed spinach. Splash decanted and drank over two hours. Everything is going well for this wine. The aroma screams Latour and could be enjoyed 10 feet away. The wine was tight at first but quickly opened up to reveal the classic gravel, lead pencil, and blueberry purée that is so pervasive in Pauillac. The last glass was better than the first and I only wish I was able to decant it longer before indulging. I simply do not understand why so much attention is paid to vintage, because 2001 was not a celebrated year, yet this wine was phenomenal.

3/3/2013 7:25:00 AM - Nice note. I went very long this wine EP, and have been working my way through the half bottles for a couple of years. I agree that this wine is a little tight now, and will be better in a few years, but it is mighty tasty from 375 with air now. And I agree that 2001 was a very underrated vintage. I wish that I had bought a lot more.

    Thanks for the update.
