2001 Château Latour Grand Vin

99 Points

Saturday, March 23, 2013 - The most pleasurable bottle of wine I have tasted...ever!!! This ethereal elixir warmly entreated me to ponder life's intrinsic meaning as I slowly absorbed its enthralling virtues. This Grand Vin fundamentally altered my understanding of the riveting world of wine; I will forever remain spellbound by its captivating allure.

Cabernet Sauvignon strikes a harmonious chord with me that surpasses all other varietals; this is my bias. This wine conveys the noble purity of Cabernet Sauvignon, wonderfully accentuated by other varietals, combined with Bordeaux's exceptional terroir. It features far too many layers and enticing elements to name and more charming elegance than one might ever know what to do with. It is also unquestionably the best balanced wine I have tasted; it possesses a texture unlike anything else. Finally, this Château Latour stands as a monument of well-made simplicity in a world of countless overdone wines.

I realize 2001 was not a celebrated vintage but I do not think that matters here. Perhaps the only difference with more renowned vintages is aging potential. If the best vintages truly exceed this wine's complexity, purity, and balance, then the rating system may require reevaluation. Still, I have left open the possibility by scoring this 99 points.
