92 Points

Sunday, October 17, 2010 - Drank this way too young. The wood stood out on this wine like a sore thumb. Nice initial funk on the nose that eventually blew off and was accompanied by earthy notes. On the palate, tart cherry fruit was dominant with delicate dark chocolate shavings (like those found on chocolate cream pie), but the flavors were marred by overt wood. Feared the wine would prove to be monolithic; pleasantly surprised that it really filled out overnight. On day 2, the nose displayed classic notes of leather, earth and cherry but then showed notes that also emerged on the palate – dark fruit such as prunes and plums and a hint of maraschino cherry, brown sugar and spices. The mouthfeel was much silkier but angular woody edges lurked in the background. Is it worth the 96 rating by Spectator? I can’t agree at this stage, though it is an enjoyable and nuanced wine. 92-93 pts.
