Saturday, December 29, 2012 - My daughter's birth year wine, drank with her and other family members at a post-holiday dinner of homemade pizzas. Despite some concerns regarding this wine's provenance and longevity, along with a soaked, crumbling cork, it turned out to be remarkably good. Still mostly garnet in color, with some browning and amber at the rim. Nice nose of fragrant herbs and stewed fruits. On the palate, beautifully balanced, with a lot of bottle sweetness, tertiary favors of tobacco, soy sauce, and leather, along with an almost citrus-like acidity. Fully resolved tannins for a silky mouthfeel. Definitely exceeded my expectations, and I don't know that the younger tasters quite knew what to make of it - but no one failed to empty their glass or ask for more. I doubt there are many bottles of this still out there, but if properly stored, this wine still has lots of pleasure to provide.
