Sunday, March 20, 2011 - 14.8% alcohol. Tasted at Zazu Restaurant in Santa Rosa. My “re-entry” wine after a six-week hiatus. My 3rd and final 07 Carlisle “Carlisle” and one of the most satisfying Carlisle’s I’ve ever tasted. Vines planted in 1927 by Alcide Pelletti. A field-blend including some Petite, Alicante and Grand Noir.

Expressive red and black fruit aromas. Raspberry, black cherry cardamom spice and pepper highlight a bright, concentrated, yet nuanced palate. Very rich with great balance – even though I hadn’t tasted wine in weeks I detected no heat. Dry and complex with great length and finish. In a wonderful place at the moment, just lovely.

Zazu was a find. Had the salumi, cheese plate with dates, grilled chicken with mushrooms and BACON. Not a place for a romantic dinner – too loud and vibrant, but a foodie paradise. Considered by some to be a showy, stand-alone Prima Donna, this Zinfandel was a beautiful complement to Duskie’s exceptionally deft meal.
